The team consists of seven bright students, each chosen through a competitive selection process designed to find the most talented young minds in astronomy. These students represent different cities and schools, showing the widespread interest in astronomy across Bangladesh.

Team Members:

  • Saptarshi Rahman – Hurd International School
  • Md Radit Raiyan – Adamjee Cantonment College
  • Shohini Shombhar Kongka – Ideal College
  • Md Mokhdum Amin Fahim – Police Lines Secondary School, Khulna
  • Md Jubayer Hossain Jisan – Rajshahi Collegiate School
  • Sayantan Roy – South Herald English School & College

Each of these participants earned their spot on the team through national-level competitions, workshops, and intensive training camps organized by the Bangladesh Astro-Olympiad National Committee. Their selection highlights their strong understanding of astronomy, problem-solving skills, and dedication to science education.

About the Open World Astronomy Olympiad

The Open World Astronomy Olympiad (OWAO) is one of the leading global competitions in astronomy and space science for school students. Held annually, the event attracts participants from dozens of countries, offering them the chance to test their knowledge in multiple rounds:

  • Theoretical Round: Students solve complex problems related to astrophysics, planetary science, stellar evolution, and cosmology.
  • Practical Round: Participants work with real data, charts, and simulated observations to analyze astronomical phenomena.
  • Observational Round: Contestants identify stars, constellations, and celestial objects using star maps or telescopes.

These rounds are designed to encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity. Students are challenged not just to memorize facts, but to apply scientific methods, analyze data, and think like professional astronomers.

Significance for Bangladesh

The participation of the Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad team reflects a growing passion for science education in the country. Over the past decade, Bangladesh has seen an increasing number of science fairs, space-related workshops, and astronomy clubs, many of which are dedicated to inspiring young learners.

Bangladesh also made headlines in space technology by launching its first communications satellite, Bangabandhu-1, in 2018. Events like the Astronomy Olympiad help build on that momentum, showing students that there is a future for them in astronomy, astrophysics, and aerospace research.

Building Scientific Skills

For the Bangladeshi participants, the experience is about much more than winning medals. By competing in this international event, they gain:

  • Exposure to Global Standards: Working alongside students from around the world gives them insight into different teaching and learning methods.
  • Hands-on Experience: The competition requires practical skills, from using telescopes to analyzing real astronomical data.
  • Confidence and Inspiration: Representing Bangladesh on a global platform motivates students to aim higher in their academic careers.
  • Networking Opportunities: Meeting other science enthusiasts and professionals opens doors for future collaboration and study abroad opportunities.

Cultural Exchange in Russia

The Olympiad is not just about science; it is also a cultural experience. Students from Bangladesh have the chance to explore Russian culture, interact with peers from other nations, and take part in activities outside of the competition. This exchange helps build friendships and mutual understanding between countries, turning the event into a global celebration of science and diversity.

Growing Interest in Astronomy in Bangladesh

In recent years, astronomy has captured the imagination of students across Bangladesh. The efforts of organizations like the Bangladesh Astronomical Association (BAA) and the Bangladesh Astro-Olympiad National Committee have played a key role in creating interest through seminars, stargazing events, and training camps.

Looking to the Future

The results of the 2025 Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad team’s participation will be announced at the closing ceremony on September 27. Regardless of the outcome, their presence on this global stage is already a victory — proving that Bangladesh is nurturing a generation of young scientists eager to explore the cosmos.

Their participation will likely inspire more students to join future national Olympiads, attend astronomy camps, and consider careers in science, engineering, and research.
