Marshawn Kneeland Death has sent shockwaves through the NFL world as the Dallas Cowboys confirmed that their 24-year-old defensive end was found dead early Thursday morning in Frisco, Texas. Police said the cause of death appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Frisco Police Department, the tragic series of events began late Wednesday night when the Texas Department of Public Safety requested assistance in locating a vehicle that had evaded troopers during a pursuit. The car, driven by Kneeland, was later found crashed along the southbound Dallas Parkway. After he abandoned the vehicle, a drone and K-9 search unit were deployed, and his body was discovered at approximately 1:31 a.m.
Authorities revealed that Marshawn Kneeland had expressed suicidal thoughts prior to the incident. The official cause of death will be determined by the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Dallas Cowboys organization issued a heartbreaking statement following the news:
“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
Kneeland, a standout player from Western Michigan University, was selected by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. In his short but promising career, he recorded 26 tackles, four quarterback hits, one sack, and one fumble recovery over 18 appearances.
Earlier this week, he delivered one of the most memorable moments of his career when he recovered a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown in the Cowboys’ 27–17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. His performance had drawn praise from both fans and coaches. It was a defining moment for the young defensive end — the kind of play that showcased not only his athleticism but also his determination and situational awareness on the field.
The touchdown became an instant highlight across sports networks, with commentators describing it as a “spark of brilliance” that energized the Cowboys during a difficult game. Kneeland’s teammates celebrated him on the sidelines, chanting his name as he smiled and raised his arms in triumph. Even though the Cowboys eventually lost the matchup, Kneeland’s effort stood out as one of the most talked-about plays of the week.

Head coach Mike McCarthy later told reporters, “That’s what we’ve been seeing from Marshawn in practice — focus, intensity, and heart. He’s the kind of player who never gives up on a play.” Fans flooded social media to congratulate him, calling the moment “the beginning of something special.”
For Kneeland, that touchdown represented more than a score — it symbolized years of dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance. Many close to him said he had finally started to come into his own in the NFL, turning potential into performance and inspiring those around him with his resilience.
His agent, Jonathan Perzley of Sportstars Inc., expressed deep grief in a statement:
“I watched him fight his way from a hopeful kid at Western Michigan with a dream to being a respected professional for the Dallas Cowboys. Marshawn poured his heart into every snap, practice, and every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and goodness is a pain I can hardly put into words.”
Kneeland’s personal life was marked by tragedy even before his NFL journey. He had previously spoken about losing his mother, Wendy Kneeland, before the draft — an event that deeply impacted his life. “I always told her, ‘I’m going to the NFL,’ and I made it,” he said shortly after being drafted.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from teammates, fans, and mental health advocates across social media. The NFL community continues to mourn the loss of a player who showed immense promise and character both on and off the field.
